Metadata Summary

Originator Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis Laboratory, University of Minnesota
Abstract Raster-based land cover data set derived from 30-meter resolution Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. Classifications are divided into two levels; this is the level-2 map. The coverage consists of 12 classes including: 0-4% impervious, 5-10% impervious, 11-25% impervious, 26-50% impervious 51-75% impervious, 75-100% impervious, Cropland, Planted trees & grasses, Coniferous, Deciduous, Upland shrubland & herbaceous, Lowland shrubland & herbaceous, Water. Definitions for these classes are based on the Minnesota Land Cover Classification System (MLCCS).

Attribute Accuracy The data set has an overall classification accuracy of 85% for level-2 classification. See additional note under 'Lineage'.
Logical Consistency ERDAS/Imagine .img file or GeoTiff .tif file
Completeness Data provides complete coverage over the stated extent of the data
Horizontal Positional Accuracy 1/4 pixel or about 7.5 meters
Lineage Production note for TCMA_LandCover_Level-2_tif:

Landsat Thematic Mapper multi-temporal imagery was classified using a a three-stage hybrid classification method within ERDAS/Imagine software. The first stage was an unsupervised classification and stratification. The second stage was a supervised classification of forest types, rule-based clustering of non-forested vegetation, and regression estimation of percent impervious area of urban areas. The third stage was the final map generation and post processing. Single, isolated pixels that produced a salt-and-pepper effect on the classified imagery were removed in the post-processing step.

NOTE: In the course of the classification of cover types from the imagery, one land cover category was difficult to distinguish. Gravel pits have the same signature as paved areas and are impossible to separate out based on the signature alone. This is an issue in the Land Cover-Level 2 and Impervious Surface Categories. To distinguish the gravel pits, EPPL users can use the 'extractive' category in other land use/cover files. Other software users can obtain the Arc/INFO export files derived from the Minnesota Geological Survey map, 'Aggregate Resources for the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, Minnesota -1999' - MGS Miscellaneous Map Series Map M-102.
