Abstract | Landsat TM data have been used to map the percentage of impervious surface area of the seven-county TCMA for the year 2000. Impervious surfaces are defined as areas impenetrable by water– including roads, rooftops, sidewalks and parking lots. The coverage provides information on the percentage of impervious surface on a 30-m pixel basis for all urban areas. The impervious surface layer was derived from a single date of Landsat-5 TM data. Following the classification of land cover types, a regression model relating percent impervious surface area to Landsat TM greenness values was used to estimate the percent impervious surface area for pixels classified as urban or developed. Classification of the Landsat TM data provides a means to map and quantify the degree of impervious surface area, an indicator of environmental quality, over large geographic areas and over time. |

Attribute Accuracy | The accuracy assessment was completed by selecting independent sample areas over the imagery. The percent impervious surface area was determined on DOQs for each sample and then compared to the estimated percent impervious surface from the regression model. The agreement between the Landsat estimate and DOQ measurements, as indicated by R˛, was 0.91, with a standard error for of 8.1%. See additional note under 'Lineage'. | |||

Lineage | Production notes for TCMA_Impervious_2000.tif: The source data for the Impervious Surface coverage was Landsat-5 TM imagery over path 27, rows 28 and 29 acquired on 9/12/2000. Well-distributed sample areas were selected to represent levels of percent imperviousness from DOQ's (Digital Ortho Quarter-Quads) covering the TCMA. A complete range of percent imperviousness was collected with at least two sample areas for every 5% interval. ArcView 3.2 was used to digitize the boundaries around each impervious feature and calculate the impervious surface percentage for each individual sample area. After calculating and attributing the percent imperviousness for each sample area, we determined the mean Landsat TM tasseled cap greenness value for each sample area by overlaying the sample onto Landsat greenness image. We then created a second order polynomial regression equation with the mean greenness values as the independent variable and DOQ sampled percent impervious surface area as the dependent variable. With this regression equation, we estimated impervious surface percent for each image pixel and rescaled the output values from 0 - 100%. NOTE: In the course of the classification of cover types from the imagery, one land cover category was difficult to distinguish. Gravel pits have the same signature as paved areas and are impossible to separate out based on the signature alone. This is an issue in the Land Cover-Level 2 and Impervious Surface Categories. To distinguish the gravel pits, EPPL users can use the 'extractive' category in other land use/cover files. Other software users can obtain the Arc/INFO export files derived from the Minnesota Geological Survey map, 'Aggregate Resources for the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, Minnesota -1999' - MGS Miscellaneous Map Series Map M-102.
